Club reports
President's Report, August 2011
I am pleased to present my report for the 2010/11 season.
This has been an extraordinarily disruptive and difficult year for the club, members as individuals, and for Christchurch.
Earthquake Review
The event of September 4th caused serious cracking to all seven courts and curtailed the planned court replacement of courts 4-7 inclusive, which had been approved at the AGM last year.
Any plans to repair the damage to the courts were short-lived following the February 22nd event which caused serious liquefaction over parts of our land, rendering two courts unplayable, and requiring a complete review of our future options.
The strategic planning undertaken by the Committee in the previous term and outlined at the AGM last year has greatly prepared us for the task ahead.
I have kept you informed via newsletters that the Committee has commissioned a geotechnical survey and I am hopeful that results of this may be available to be presented at the AGM.
We are hoping to carry out a temporary fix to have all seven courts playable soon.
Your Committee was determined that activities at the Club would be maintained, social play was continued, and extra social events were scheduled. As a result senior membership remained steady, but junior membership declined by about 8% as many families took refuge.
There will be no increase this year in levies from NZ Tennis or Tennis Region Canterbury, and we are not intending to increase the subscriptions.
As a marketing initiative we will be offering a bigger incentive on subscriptions to all members this year. Subscription invoices will be sent by the end of July for prompt payment by the end of August.
This will hopefully give us some indication of membership in what are uncertain times in Christchurch.
Financial Position
The annual accounts will show that the Club successfully negotiated a substantial settlement with our insurers, which we have invested pending decisions on redevelopment.
The trading position of the Club has improved with an increased net surplus before depreciation, as a result of good control of our largest expense items, coaching and administration.
I would like to thank our Treasurer Doug Dixon for his sound financial management and guidance.
We successfully negotiated another Gold status sponsorship Scenic Hotel Group, incorporating Heartland Hotels, Scenic Hotels and Te Waonui Forest Retreat.
We acknowledge the ongoing support of all our sponsors:

Administration
Our Head Coach Stu Chalmers has done a superb job delivering an excellent coaching programme within budget. Well done Stu and the coaching team.
Our Junior Club Captain Megan Bruynel once again managed the junior competition programme well until it was abruptly curtailed in late February.
Our new Club Administrator Victoria Richardson was appointed shortly after the AGM and has been a great addition to our team ably supporting our Junior Club Captain, the Treasurer, and me.
Competitions
Both junior and senior interclub competitions were cancelled following the February event. Only the Men's and Women's senior grades had been completed. Our Men's team came third and the Women's team came sixth.
The Senior club championships were abandoned this past year. These will be reinstated this coming year. The Junior club championships were successfully carried out.
The Winter Business House competition was transferred to Te Kura Tennis Club and successfully concluded there.
Conclusion
I would like to thank the Management Committee for their support this year.
Special thanks to James Spence as Club Captain, and to Wendy Chang and Richard Clemett for organising Tuesday morning social play, and to all the various competition team captains, and parent supervisors of junior teams who work voluntarily to keep the" wheels" of the Club turning.
This coming year will be a challenging one as we deal with the future of our courts. We are well placed financially to make those important decisions and we look forward to your support with the decision-making process.
I wish all members a successful 2011/12 tennis season.
